The Patrol Division is comprised of uniformed officers responsible for providing 24-hour protection and service to the citizens of the Town of Scarborough. These officers are the first to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls regarding criminal activity. They are also responsible for preserving peace and promoting safety. They work to reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime and apprehend offenders when crimes are committed. Duties consist of, but are not limited to, patrolling assigned areas, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, and taking reports. Patrol is staffed with five Sergeants who supervise fifteen officers. Shift manpower is determined by time of day and anticipated workload. These officers are all full-time employees who have graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. They patrol, with cruisers and a motorcycle, an area of fifty-three square miles, divided into three zones. This includes residential and commercial areas. The town is also a coastal community with a large increase in population during the summer months. Officers handled a total of 23,227 calls for service during 2002. Officers are also involved in different specialty areas including; K-9 , Accident Reconstruction, Honor Guard, Special Response Team, Bike Patrol, and Community Policing. These duties make take place during a shift or in addition to it. Officers also have the opportunity to work outside jobs for overtime. These include, but are not limited to, providing a police presence at Scarborough Downs Harness Racing Facility and Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. The department also employs approximately thirty reserve officers. These officers are all required to complete a one hundred-hour training course before working in uniform. These officers ride as second officers in patrol cars on a voluntary basis. They also work at various outside jobs for pay.
